Debre Birhan Polytechnic College AI-powered Virtual career service
About
Debre Birhan Poltechnic College (DBPTC), one of the pioneer public colleges that are found in Amhara Regional State, is established in 1996 in Debre Birhan City for rendering vocational training for youths and other publics. It is established with the vision of improved life of the community by producing globally competent labor forces and by providing favorable technology.
Unfortunately, DBPTC’s Vocational Guidance & Counseling Service Center (VGC) is not aged like the college. It is established in October, 2022 based on the direction of Amhara Region Government’s Labor and training Bureau to support students in their career readiness and transition to the workforce. Then after, it had been supplemented with Federal & Regional drafted guide lines of May 2023 and July 2023 respectively. The center is staffed according to the final draft of the region that shows the center is under the direct supervision of academic vice dean. It consists of one coordinator and four practitioners [one labor market analysis & tracer study officer, two vocational/career counselors (Female and male) and one industry linkage & job placement officer] and provides services such as career counseling, resume and cover letter assistance, job search strategies, and job fairs. However, the center has faced challenges in fully meeting student demand and providing comprehensive services, especially when in-person activities were limited due to physical distance and limited working hours.
The center is working in a close coordination and collaboration with internal & external partners to accomplish its goals & objectives. Different departments along with their students are among the major internal one. The intimate relationships among those departments enable the center to deliver its services in an effective & efficient manner. Admin offices are also the other internal partners that can assist the center by providing the necessary inputs for the center. Employers, NGOs, public organizations are the external partners. Even though the center is at its infant stage, it is working closely with NGOs and public organizations. However coordination & collaboration with employers is not well organized & structured. Currently, the center is providing trainings & other services that prepare the students for their current & future lives such as:
  1. Life skill training
  2. Career counseling (both group & individual)
  3. Digital Literacy training
  4. Effective work habit (Employability skills) training &
  5. Organizing of cooperative training (it is at its infant stage)
With the help of the career center’s service, graduate students who get it are able to build their confidence, well prepared for their job interview, write application letter & Curriculum Vitae effectively & become moderately skilled in computer. As a result, they get job prior to the others who do not get these services.
